The strap retracts the shoulders — pulls them back and holds them there — which is what a figure-of-eight brace is for after a clavicle fracture. It sits across the back with a padded strap through each armpit, meeting at a pad between the shoulder blades, so the pull spreads across the upper back rather than landing in one spot. Both closures are at the back on touch tape, and a D-ring at the centre keeps the straps from twisting as you tighten them. How long it is worn and how firmly it is set are decided by the practitioner managing the fracture.
